Having lots of fun and delights in a 3-day all-inclusive vacation without gaining extra-fat

I recently returned from an amazing, short all-inclusive vacation with my family. We spent three full days enjoying plenty of delicious treats without gaining a single pound of weight. One might think a brief three-day trip wouldn't cause much of a hassle for long-term fitness goals, but considering that on the first day alone I ate at least 1,000 calories over my standard daily maintenance budget, it easily could have been a problem.

Packing in an extra 1,000+ calories over maintenance every day can effortlessly turn into a pound of pure fat in just 24 hours - or 4 to 5 pounds over a long weekend (which has absolutely happened to me in the past). To make matters worse, that rapid spillover inevitably settles as belly fat, which is the hardest area to lose after 40. That is definitely not something to be happy about when you've been working your butt off in the gym for months just to drop an inch around your waist, right?

However, I've learned an incredible amount since I began my after-40 fitness journey. These lessons have helped me maintain absolute control over my eating habits without feeling restricted or missing out during a dream family vacation. Gaining that nutritional awareness made it easy for me to confidently navigate the all-you-can-eat buffet. By following a few simple rules, I kept myself from losing control of my diet without spoiling a single minute of the fun.

1. Avoiding Sudden Sugar Spikes

Consuming large amounts of highly processed, sugary, or high-carbohydrate foods causes an immediate, aggressive spike in your blood sugar levels. This roller coaster not only drains your energy and spoils your mood, but it also triggers intense psychological cravings for even more sugar. When the food is sitting right under your nose at a buffet, that creates a vicious cycle where you end up consuming massive amounts of empty calories. Choosing the wrong foods might give you a few brief minutes of pleasure, but it will cost you a couple of hours in a sluggish, irritable mood - and that’s a trade-off I never want to deal with when I am on vacation.

One detail I absolutely love about all-inclusive resorts is that they offer a massive variety of fresh foods every single day. This abundance makes it simple to enjoy yourself with great, high-quality whole foods by building balanced, flavorful dishes at every meal. I made sure to combine complex carbohydrates (whole grains, legumes, and fresh vegetables) with high-quality protein (poultry, fish, steak, or lean pork), healthy fats (like a tablespoon of almonds or walnuts sprinkled over a salad, fatty fish, and raw olive oil), and fiber-rich foods. This approach promoted a gradual, steady release of glucose into my bloodstream instead of skyrocketing it.

I also used a specific trick to mitigate dessert: pairing sweets directly with fresh fruit. Adding high-fiber fruits alongside a treat lowers the overall glycemic impact because the fruit's structural fiber slows down digestion and blunts sudden blood glucose spikes. For example, I paired my ice cream with fresh cantaloupe. If I wanted a piece of cake, I would take half a slice and pair it with grapes or fresh oranges, matching the fruit profile depending on whether it was a rich chocolate or a light vanilla cake. There are endless combinations to try here; it all comes down to your personal taste.

2. Red Wine Over Sugary Cocktails and Sodas

I know, I know - we all know alcohol can temporarily slow down your metabolic rate, disrupt sleep cycles, and impact testosterone production. There are plenty of valid reasons dieticians and doctors tell us to minimize it. But let’s be real: I’m on vacation with my family, and I know I can safely enjoy a drink or two without worrying about long-term consequences. Timing and making smarter choices play a massive role when it comes to social drinking.

If I had a hearty steak or a piece of lasagna for dinner, I would accompany it with a single glass of red wine. It allowed me to share a relaxed vacation mood with my wife while listening to a great live band playing at the resort. I simply sipped it slowly, savoring every drop. By completely avoiding sugary draft beers, mixed liquors, and sodas, and sticking to a glass or two of clean red wine only after a highly balanced, macro-dense meal, I eliminated the risk of adding unwanted fat to my midsection.

3. Drinking 8 to 10 Glasses of Water Every Day

Proper hydration fixes almost every common physical hiccup, especially when you are indulging at an all-inclusive resort. My daily routine started with a massive glass of pure water first thing in the morning - a habit I’ve successfully kept up for years. From there, I drank roughly two glasses of water with breakfast, another after my morning coffee, at least four additional glasses between noon and dinner, and always a matching glass of water for every glass of wine in the evening.

Simultaneously, I strictly avoided adding extra salt at the table. Most commercially prepared buffet foods are already heavily seasoned and packed with sodium; you don’t need to add extra grains to your plate. A high-sodium diet causes rapid fluid retention, which can give you a bloated belly and artificially spike your weight on the scale the next morning. Plus, you will find that food actually tastes significantly better once your palate adapts to skipping table salt.

4. Intentional Daily Activity

Staying active doesn't mean you have to abandon your family to live in the gym. For me, it started with simple lifestyle choices: taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Our resort room was located all the way up on the 10th floor, yet we still chose to use the stairs 90% of the time. Additionally, I went for a brisk 10 to 15-minute walk immediately following most of our large meals, swam moderately in the pool every day, and knocked out a focused, two-hour training session at the hotel gym on the second morning of our trip. Thanks to all the extra carbohydrate energy stored from my first day of indulgence, I was so full of strength and energy that I felt like I could have trained for many hours.

5. Optimizing Sleep Quality

In my normal day-to-day routine, I prioritize 7 to 8 hours of sleep every single night. However, with all the evening events and family parties happening around the resort, I averaged closer to 6 hours of sleep per night on this trip. Even so, because I was fueling my body with high-quality food choices and spending highly rewarding, stress-free time with my family, those 6 hours turned out to be incredibly deep, relaxing, and high-quality rest. If you aren't already aware, chronic poor sleep or high stress is a primary physiological risk factor for hormonal weight gain and elevated cortisol levels.

We Never Stop Learning, Regardless of Age

At 51 years old, I am still consistently uncovering new depths of what a true fitness and healthy lifestyle looks like. Looking back, absolutely none of my previous family vacations went down like this one. In the past, I would eat whatever crossed my path. Even though I naturally prefer clean, whole foods, standing in front of a massive all-you-can-eat buffet used to cause me to step completely out of line. I would indulge heavily in desserts, drink multiple beers by the pool, have an appetizer before lunch, and follow it up with liquor or wine after dinner - all while surviving on poor sleep. That is the classic cycle of excess that many of us fall into in the pursuit of "a good time" on holiday.

But let me tell you this clearly: I have never felt this incredible on a vacation in my entire life. My mood was perfectly stable, I felt physically powerful, and I was full of vitality like never before. All of this comes down to the compounding benefits of my after-40 fitness journey, which has completely transformed my health and quality of life in just 10 months of consistent training.
