What is it like to go back to the gym at 48, after a long break of 17 years

Returning to the Gym After 17 Years

If you were active in sports during your youth but became sedentary over the years, you might be surprised by how quickly your body responds once you return to the gym. That’s exactly what happened to me in my first month back at the gym, after a 17-year break that started when I was 31.

The Disappearing Pains

I had lingering joint pains that I assumed were just part of aging. For years, I felt a deep ache behind my right knee every night before bed, often keeping me up for hours. During those 17 years away from training, I sat at a desk for over 8 hours a day, barely moving.

But after just four or five workouts, which included a 15–20-minute full-body warmup each time and one dedicated leg day, the pain disappeared. It was shocking. Soon after, my back and shoulder pain also faded. These improvements made it clear: the pain wasn’t age, it was inactivity.

Fueling My Comeback with Diet Changes

From the first day I returned to the gym, I also cleaned up my diet. That decision had a compounding effect on my energy, recovery, and sleep.

I cut out bread, pasta, rice, sweets, processed foods, and junk food. Instead, I focused on nutrient-dense meals: rolled oats, fruits, and some nuts with whole milk yogurt for breakfast. The rest of the day included lots of vegetables, lean proteins like chicken breast, fish, or eggs.

I also started controlling portion sizes. Each meal fits into a 10-ounce bowl, my visual cue for not overeating. The only time I go bigger is with fresh salads: lettuce, onion, lemon juice, olive oil, and 100g of grilled chicken breast.

Unexpected Wins: Sleep, Posture & Energy

The physical changes brought mental ones, too. Within days, my sleep improved; I was getting 8 solid hours almost every night. I had more energy during the day and a better mood overall.

One of the most surprising changes? My posture. I became more aware of how I sat, stood, and moved throughout the day. Whether I’m working at the computer, walking, cooking, or just doing daily tasks, I carry myself differently. More upright. More confident.

Age Is Just a Number

After a month of consistent training and clean eating, I started to feel like myself again, but stronger, more energized, and more alive than I had in years. The athlete in me that had been dormant woke up fast. I looked forward to workouts. My motivation was natural, not forced.

I feel younger now, and age has started to feel like just a number.

Looking back, I’m still amazed by how quickly everything started to improve, just by moving again and eating with purpose. If you’ve been on a long break like I was, don’t let the years discourage you. Your body remembers. You just have to give it the signal to wake up.
